SFTIO: Guatemala

If someone asked me to tell them about one defining moment in my life, it would be easy for me to answer. And my answer would be my year teaching in Guatemala. It seems silly to me to not include it as a time when I grew.  During this time I learned that I really could live out of my comfort zone and in a completely foreign culture. I actually miss being foreign! In Guate (pronounced Gwah-tay and lovingly used by natives), I taught at a school called the Christian Academy of Guatemala as the art and music teacher. I learned that I, indeed, could teach middle and high schoolers - something I was always afraid of. I learned that learning a language can be difficult but worth the work. I learned that many of the things I take for granted or find necessary are not. I learned how to drive without rules. And I'm alive to tell you about it. I learned to try new foods and LOVE most of them. I built new, life long relationships. I lived like a Guatemalan. Paid rent, bills, grocery shopped and the like. Yes I grew a lot. And I would do it all over again!

I decided to do some hidden journaling. Mostly because I ran out of room. LOL. So I got a little creative and added this little flap that tucks behind the layout.

This layout is created using the lovely August Growth kit from SFTIO. It's a beautiful kit. Calm, inviting and full of awesome product!
